What?

SmartMedBoxes is an intelligent and interactive medicine box that uses LED lights and sounds for reminding which medicine to take right now. Say, its 1 PM Monday and Bob has to take his afternoon pills at 2PM, the compartment that corresponds to Monday - Afternoon is lighted with a Green LED. Half and hour before the stipulated time, 1:30 PM the Green LED starts blinking. As soon as it strikes 2 PM, the blinking Red LED goes off - catching Bob's attention. The LEDs turn off as Bob opens the box, in the event that the medicines aren't taken till 2:10 PM - the loud alarm goes off. The only way to shut the alarm is to open the medicine box and hence consume the medicines.

Each and every box has the Green and Red micro LED embedded inside each compartment and an alarm speaker fixed behind the box.

Why?

For the simple reason - we forget to take medicines ! And why not use a simple alarm or a mobile reminder ? - Well when you use a reminder - your interaction cycle is to first turn off the reminder and then search for the medicine box, locate the medicines to be taken and consume. In our busy lifestyles, we turn off the reminder but still procrastinate to take the medicines, we many times misplace the medicine boxes and old people might have problems locating which medicine to take.

SmartMedBoxes LED / alarm switches off when you open the medicine box - procrastinating doesn't work ! If you have misplaced your box, the LED / alarm will definitely help you locate it, and since the LED lights the box corresponding to the day and time - busy ones can easily locate the appropriate medicines.

How?

Two micro LEDs - Green and Red are fixed in each compartment of SmartMedBoxes. All these LEDs - 21 Green and 21 Red in this case - and the alarm are wired to the micro controller which is equipped with a timer circuit . The schedule for the medicines are preprogrammed into the circuit so as to perform the actions at the stipulated time.

The main challenge in this case was to provide a GUI to the end user in the event that he wants to customize the schedule for the medicines. This was achieved by providing a USB interface to set the time.
