//QRNavSys - 2D Barcode based Information and Navigation System

What?

QRNavSys is a research project aiming to explore new possibilities in contextual navigation and information system at very low cost. QR Code is a type of 2D Barcode which captures information and can be decoded with the help of any camera phone. The scenario shown in the video clearly illustrates the point that the system can be used along with GPS and other navigation solutions however it forms its own niche in the sense that it has no special need of a hardware neither does it cost anything. Such a system makes for an ideal solution in local area, malls, offices etc.

Why?

GPS requires special hardware, Maps requires a net connection and besides these are static information sources - they aren't tangible. What if we could look up a place, find its photos or say you meet a person and capture all contacts data - all this by a single interaction ! QRNavSys is an inquiry into such a type of sustainable, low-cost interactive system that can be deployed to act as a contextual and tangible information and navigation system without the need of GPS or an Internet connection.

How?

We have coded our own application which is a QR Code reader + Information warehouse. The QR Code encodes a 2 byte pointer (A QR code can support up to 2953 bytes), hence the resulting QR code is of the least complexity and can be decoded by the most basic phones The coding is done in J2ME - the application first triggers the camera, decodes the QR code, retrieves the pointer, finds the associated data and displays it along wit the interactions available.

And..

We have a prototype ready and are looking forward for improvisations in the interactions. The project is being done collaboratively with Interaction Designer Keyur Sorathia
